Bactrim

Synonyms. Biseptol - Septrin.
The dosage form. Bactrim is a combination drug, consisting sulfa drug sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in a ratio of 5:1. Bactrim is available in the following dosage forms: 1. The pill adult content in one tablet of sulfamethoxazole and 0.4 g of trimethoprim 0.08 g in the package, but 20 pieces. 2. Tablets for kids with content in each tablet of sulfamethoxazole and 0.1 g of trimethoprim 0.02 g in a package of 20 pieces. 3. Suspension in syrup in bottles of 100 ml In one teaspoon of a suspension containing sulfamethoxazole 0.2 g trimethoprim and 0.04 g.

Therapeutic properties. Bactrim has antimicrobial, bactericidal effect, causing the death of the causative agents of various infectious diseases, including those resistant to sulfonamides. When administered drug is rapidly and completely absorbed, the effect lasts up to 9 to 13 hours, therefore, two-fold, the drug provides maintenance of therapeutic concentration in the blood.

Indications for use. Bactrim is used for treatment of infectious respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, pneumonia, lung abscess, purulent pleurisy, empyema, etc. the product is used in infectious diseases urinary tract infections: urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis. Bactrim is prescribed for treatment of gastrointestinal infections: dysentery, paratyphoid fever, typhoid fever, enterocolitis. The drug is also used in surgical infections, wound infection, septicaemia - meningitis, gonorrhea and other infectious diseases caused by susceptible to malaria pathogens.

Rules of application. Bactrim assign inside: adults-2 tablets 2 times a day, morning and evening after meals. In severe cases, appoint more intensive treatment. The course of treatment lasts 5 to 14 days. In chronic infections for the prevention of exacerbations can take 1 tablet 2 times a day. Duration of treatment determined by the physician.Children bactrim is prescribed in doses appropriate to the age of the child, in tablets or as a suspension in syrup morning and evening after meals.

Side effects and complications. In the process of the drug can be nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, various allergic reactions. Some patients may be kidney failure (nephropathy), possible suppression of hematopoietic function (leukopenia, agranulocytosis). Therefore, treatment with bactrim should be conducted under the supervision of the indicators of urine and blood.

Contraindications. It is impossible to use bactrim if you are hypersensitive to sulfa drugs, diseases of the kidneys and liver non-infectious nature, diseases of the hematopoietic system. Contraindicated use of bactrim in pregnant women, preterm and newborn infants. With caution the preparation is used in young children. Bactrim should not be used in conjunction with novocaine, anestezin and folic acid (reduced effect), with chloramphenicol, butadiene, furadonin, diuretics, acids (increases the risk of complications).
